Currently, legislators are focused on banning books or naming a state mushroom, while our state falls behind in education and other vital areas.Hello, I am Michelle LaFleur, and I hope to represent District 68 in the Oklahoma House of Representatives. I was born in Tulsa and spent most of my childhood in Bixby and Tulsa.My mother is an electrical engineer, and my father is a carpenter and musician. This mix of white and blue collar gave me a diverse set of experiences and an appreciation for all the different ways people contribute to our community. Focusing on the commonality instead of the differences.I graduated from the University of Tulsa, where I studied Business Administration. After graduation, I worked my way up to Land Manager “landman” at local Oil and Gas companies. While working in this field, I also experienced the challenges as those companies consolidated or left the state.Fortunately, I have been able to transfer my land management skills to other industries and keep my family in the Tulsa area. My husband and I have spent the last 15 years raising our family in District 68, with a child in public school and roots in the local community.When I can find some free time, I enjoy going to concerts with my family and watching Formula 1 with my Husband. I also volunteer with a rescue group called BRAT Basenji Rescue and Transport that helps find suitable homes for basenjis, a high maintenance, but loveable dog breed.

Michelle's experience speaks for itself. She is headstrong in working for a better Oklahoma that treats everyone with respect, dignity, and transparency.

At 19 years old, my mother, a working mother taking college classes at night, was able to buy a small home through the HUD (Housing and Urban Development) program. This house provided our family with stability and helped protect us from rising rents.&nbsp;As housing costs have risen dramatically, families are struggling to afford rent, and evictions have increased, Contributing to an increase in citizens who find themselves without a home and facing homelessness. As a representative, I will fight to expand programs that increase the supply of affordable housing and help move hard working citizens into stable housing.

Our public schools and teachers have been underfunded while the current Oklahoma leadership shifts millions of taxpayer funds to private schools. These institutions are not held to the same standards as public schools and may discriminate on the basis of religion or ability. I will advocate for ending the school voucher program and prioritizing funding for our public schools while supporting our teachers and students.&nbsp;

Protecting Public Education

Special Elections cost Oklahomans hundreds of thousands of dollars and minimize voter participation.&nbsp; We can reduce wasteful government spending by simplifying the election schedule and requiring state questions to appear on general election ballots. Special elections should be used only when required to fill a leadership gap, not when lawmakers seek to minimize voter&nbsp;participation by avoiding the general election. Governor Stitt has proposed limiting special elections, but his proposal allows more than 8 elections in odd-numbered years and more than 4 elections in even-numbered years. It is absurd to believe that this schedule will encourage participation and fight voter fatigue, as his administration claims. I will support legislation that reduces government waste by requiring state questions to be included on general election ballots and limiting the use of special elections.
